World steel production in January fell by 6% due to a sharp drop in smelting in China
Global raw steel production in the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 155.0 million tonnes in January 2022, down 6.1% from January 2021.
The world's leading steel producer, the People's Republic of China, reduced steel production by 11.2% year-on-year to 81.7 million tons.
India produced 10.8 million tons of steel, up 4.7% from January 2021. Japan smelted 7.8 million tons, down 2.1% year-on-year. The US produced 7.3 million tons of steel, up 4.2% from January last year.
According to worldsteel estimates, Russia produced 6.6 million tons of steel, up 3.3% from January 2021. South Korea smelted 6.0 million tons, which is 1.0% less. Germany produced 3.3 million tons, down 1.4%. Turkey produced 3.2 million tons, down 7.8%. Brazil produced 2.9 million tons, down 4.8%. Iran is estimated to have produced 2.8 million tons, a 20.3% increase.
In January, Ukraine ranked 13th among 64 steel-producing countries, having smelted 1.85 million tons of steel, which is 0.7% more than in January 2021.
