China will continue to reduce metallurgical capacity while maintaining the growth of steel production
The Chinese steel industry should adhere to green and low-carbon development, reducing excess production while achieving stable growth, according to government officials and experts on Saturday.
They made statements at the steel industry development forum jointly organized by the Engineering Management Department of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the China Institute of Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research in Beijing.
Representative of the National Development and Reform Commission of China Xia Nong said that while increasing steel production, the main priority should be given to stabilizing the development of the industry and ensuring sustainable growth.
To this end, the nation must firmly adhere to market and law-based principles, strictly adhering to laws and regulations regarding environmental protection, energy consumption, safety and land use, he said.
He added that different situations should be approached differently to avoid mindless one-size-fits-all approaches to realize the annual reduction in steel production.
However, the environmental upgrading of the Chinese steel industry faces significant challenges, such as the difficulty of reducing carbon emissions from steel production, the relatively short time frame for achieving environmental targets, the limited potential for further improvement of mature and feasible technologies, and the increased cost of reducing emissions. .
