Digital infrastructure: Volkswagen gets its own cloud platform
Volkswagen is strengthening its digital independence by expanding its own IT infrastructure with an in-house cloud platform maintained by T-Systems, according to Automobilwoche.
The project aims to give the Wolfsburg-based group full control over its IT environment, data location and security standards, while ensuring reliable storage and operation of sensitive data and business-critical applications in accordance with European data protection regulations. VW chief information officer Gauke Stars said the group's private cloud will allow the company to process more data internally and become more economically independent. The system will work in Volkswagen's own data centers in Germany, which will allow storing more information within the European legal framework and strengthen control over confidential transactions.
VW stressed that this step is not intended to isolate: the group will continue to cooperate with international technology partners. However, owning a larger infrastructure gives Volkswagen a stronger negotiating position with large cloud-based "hyper-scalable" ones, reducing dependence on external suppliers. The company did not specify which applications will use the private cloud, but this initiative is an important step towards digital sustainability, data sovereignty and long-term strategic autonomy.
