TMK supplied high-strength drill pipes to Siberia to reduce the weight of drilling columns
Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) has supplied drill pipes with a high strength group and a reduced wall thickness for drilling wells in the fields of Western Siberia. This solution provided a reduction in the total mass of the pipe column while increasing the strength characteristics, which made it possible to increase economic and operational efficiency during drilling.
The company has mastered the production of 127 mm diameter drill pipes made of V150 strength group steel with a wall thickness of 7.52 mm. This solution was developed to replace previously used pipes made of steel of a lower strength group — S135 — with a wall thickness of 9.19 mm. Due to the reduction in the metal consumption of the column, its total weight decreased by 15% while maintaining operational characteristics and load-bearing capacity.
"TMK works closely with industry partners to create high-tech products to meet their challenges. High—strength drill pipes are one such development designed to increase economic efficiency when drilling long wells. An industrial batch of new pipes with a volume of more than 400 tons has been successfully used in the construction of wells," said Evgeny Zaselsky, TMK's Chief Engineer.
The use of a new technical solution is especially important when drilling extended horizontal sections of wells. By reducing the weight of the column, drilling costs are reduced while maintaining the required pipe characteristics such as tensile and torsional strength and fatigue life.
