Poland is facing a transition period in the energy sector, climate policy is overly optimistic: conference

ArcelorMittal Poland (AMP) is ready to switch to electric arc furnaces, but in order to make the necessary investments, it needs a guarantee of competitive electricity prices, says AMP Executive Director Wojciech Koszuta

AMP is planning a phased transition from blast furnace production at its Dombrovo-Gurnice steel mill to steel smelting in electric steelmaking furnaces, while long products will primarily be produced in electric steelmaking furnaces, which will not affect product quality.

After that, certain technological decisions will be made. Adaptation will be required to switch the production of flat sheets to EDP to obtain the required grades. However, according to Kossuta, the experience and know-how of the ArcelorMittal plant in Sestao, Spain, which, according to Kossuta, already produces a full range of flat profiles using EAF, will be used.

However, proper conditions are required for the success of this project. In his opening remarks during Thursday's session of the European Economic Congress in Katowice, which was attended by Callanish, AMP CEO emphasized the importance of policy to ensure industrial competitiveness. He stressed that this is important.: "We don't create several such strategies every year and we don't change them every year. We must implement them."

Progressive MEP Jens Geier said that the role of industry must be defended in order to preserve jobs, the value chain and raw materials for the transition to energy, as well as for defense. "We have China as a player and competitor and an unreliable U.

S. government; we need to rely on ourselves to protect our economic model", - he said.

The European Commission's Action Plan on steel and metals is "better than I thought." expected", - added Gaier, who is also a member of the European Parliament's budget committee and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. This is a holistic approach that shows that the Commission "does not think in isolation" and pays special attention to international trade, as can be seen from the adjustments to the safeguard mechanism.

As someone who promotes climate regulation, Geyer admitted: "We were much more worried about being too optimistic when it came to implementing[of climate change regulation]because it took much longer than expected Now is the time to do everything to protect the industry, because it is important for Europe[welfare]."

Germany is focused on moving from iron smelting in BFs to gas-fired direct reduction plants, but this will require huge amounts of money, Geyer continued.
