Slovenské elektrárne closed its last coal-fired power plant in Slovakia
The Slovak company Slovenské elektrárne this week stopped producing electricity at its last coal-fired power plant in Slovakia, Vojany. This is reported by the local resource Dennik N
After almost 60 years of operation, TEC Vojany in eastern Slovakia, which burned coal, is ending its work today. Slovenské elektrárne has thus stopped producing electricity from coal.
“From now on, we produce 100 percent of electricity without direct emissions,” the company said. “Vojany today stops producing electricity from coal. However, the station occupies an integral place in the history of Slovak energy. And not only it, but especially the people responsible for its construction, have been involved in its operation all these years, tirelessly bringing in many innovative ideas. Thanks to them, the power plant has survived to this day. And for this I thank them very much,” points out Ondrej Marcinczak, director of Elektrárny Vojany.
As Slovak media note, the country will continue to use coal in some thermal power plants for now.
