Marcegaglia expands digitization capabilities for quality control in Ravenna
Marcegaglia strives to improve product quality by implementing an intelligent quality management system at its facility in Ravenna, Italy.
The Eyeron solution, developed by French equipment manufacturer Fives, monitors every stage of the production process, logs quality incidents, and collects production data across all workshops. It also automatically evaluates products in real time, resulting in noticeable improvements in efficiency and quality management.
"Due to the wide range of productions and the multitude of end-user requirements, we were looking for an intelligent solution that would ensure the best quality and significantly reduce the number of rolls with reduced quality. Eyeron will be installed throughout the Ravenna plant to bring our production process and quality management to a higher level," Michele Manarese, Quality Manager at Marcegaglia Ravenna, said in a joint message sent to Kallanish.
The initial stage of the project was launched in 2024, during which a pilot solution was implemented at the facility. The company is now moving to the second stage, which includes data collection, enforcement, and enterprise-wide dashboard configuration to combine information about processes and quality on a single device.
Data collection supports quality control rules that assess the conformity of products to the needs of the end user and suggest corrective measures. methods, if necessary. All users can view data from any mobile device or computer, regardless of location, as Eyeron has been completely designed specifically for Marcegaglia.
Previously, Fives supplied Ravenna with SmartLine, an automatic control system for advanced roll processing, which was installed on four galvanizing lines in 2021.
Marcegaglia is implementing its innovative project "MasterModel", aimed at digitizing all the processes of hot-rolled roll re-rolling, from etching to galvanizing. MasterModel is a high-level mathematical software system capable of integrating HRC metallurgical details such as chemical and mechanical properties and microstructure with a given end product quality (see Kallanish passim).
