Volvo Cars signs contract to supply SSAB Zero steel

SSAB and Volvo Cars have signed a landmark agreement on the supply of SSAB Zero steel, which will begin this year, according to the Swedish steel company Kallanish.

According to SSAB, this agreement allows Volvo to be the first automaker to commit to using decarbonized steel in mass production.

According to SSAB, the steel patented by SSAB Zero is the world's first mass-produced steel made from recycled scrap metal using electricity and biogas that do not use fossil energy sources. This process results in steel with virtually zero carbon dioxide emissions, available in various grades and sizes.

The steel will be used in key components of the upcoming Volvo Cars EX60 all-electric SUV, as well as in other vehicles based on the next-generation Volvo Cars SPA3 automotive architecture According to SSAB, it meets the same strict safety standards and performance requirements as the base steel used in Volvo Cars.

Volvo Cars is committed to an all-electric future and is committed to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. "With visionary partners like Volvo Cars, we continue to lead the transformation of the steel industry," says Tony Harris, head of SSAB Europe.
