ArcelorMittal France decommissioning enrichment plant No. 1 for modernization

ArcelorMittal France has announced the start of the modernization of blast furnace No. 1 at its plant in Fos-sur-Mer with an investment of 53 million euros.

As part of the project, the copper protective plates of the furnace and other key equipment will be replaced to extend its service life. As soon as the furnace in question is put into operation in the first half of 2026, as planned, it will replace blast furnace No. 2.

Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal France participated in a regional public debate organized by the National Commission on Public Debate (CNDP). The discussion focused on reindustrialization and the transition to energy in the Foz-Étan-de-Berre region and surrounding areas. During the discussion, the company discussed a planned decarbonization project for its plant in Fos-sur-Mer, which will build an EDP to replace a blast furnace in order to reduce emissions from steel smelting by 2030. According to the feasibility studies, the cost of the project is estimated at about 750 million euros. Additional research is needed to make a final investment decision. ArcelorMittal argues that a number of conditions are required to successfully implement this transformation and ensure sustainability, including government support for investments, a developed European regulatory framework, fair competition in the global steel market, and employee support.
