EU thick-sheet metal prices overview: thick-sheet metal prices in Europe are stable despite seasonal slowdown

The summer holidays largely negated all possible price fluctuations in the European sheet metal markets in the week before August 8, and McCloskey sources discussed changes in the low-carbon segment offerings.

The Northwestern European spot market traded with prices ranging from 660 to 690 euros per ton of s235 heavy rolled steel, while prices in the Italian heavy rolling machine market ranged from 590 to 630 euros per ton.

The prices of raw materials for the Italian processing plant, however, are increasing, which could potentially lead to an increase in existing minimum prices in Southern Europe, while the supply of imported slabs coming from Asia and Brazil is slightly higher and amounts to 510-515 dollars per ton, which is considered possible with a minimum CFR price of 500 dollars per ton. The recent increase in tariffs in the United States is said to have been a major factor in increasing the availability of slabs of Brazilian origin, which were also known to have recently been purchased in large quantities from German integrated manufacturers to build stocks ahead of the final phase of the carbon boundary adjustment mechanism in January.

McCloskey's conversations with sources mainly concerned increasing the visibility of low-carbon thick-rolled products in Europe instead of the usual market activity during the holiday period. The Bulgarian electric arc furnace manufacturer (EDP) is reportedly asking for a surcharge of 100 euros per ton for its certified production of environmentally friendly thick sheet, and this goal is in line with other existing EDPS on the market-The plates are manufactured by manufacturers such as in Slovenia or Macedonia.

Market participants did not see much chance of receiving a premium of 100 euros per ton for the sale of low-carbon plates, considering that most of the relevant transactions with electric steel plants are concluded without any – or minimal – premium for environmental friendliness. In cases where surcharges are negotiated, volumes are said to be low, and purchase prices depend on the budget of the dependent project and rarely exceed surcharges of 50 euros per ton, which, according to distributors, is a more realistic estimate of low-carbon value added.
