Prices for rolled rebar in Austria are rising

Austrian sources confirm that the announcement last week of new additional sizes of fittings by some plants was followed by an increase in the supply of fittings at favorable prices.

For the first time since 2015, additional dimensions have been changed, with some plants simultaneously increasing base prices, at least for direct fittings.

The additional dimensions for the standard thickness of 12 mm were increased by 15 euros per ton to 280 euros per ton (US$325), while the base prices increased by the same amount. There are still few offers due to the summer lull, but buyer sources report supply prices of 640-650 euros per ton, which suggests a base price of 360-370 euros per ton.

The situation with rolled rebar is more unclear, given that each country has a specific supply chain. For Austrian buyers, domestic and German factories traditionally offer an effective price, making no distinction between the base price and additional sizes. "It's been a habit since I've been in this business, and certainly for more than 20 years," one customer tells Callanish.

He notes that the offer of rolls from Italian factories, which still use older lists of additional sizes, rose in price by 10-20 euros per ton per week last year. Another customer spoke about Germany's proposals, including new additional sizes, which are 30-40 euros per ton higher than before.

The cost of the new additional size for the 12 mm thick rolled reinforcement is the same as for the straight bar – 280 euros. When using thicker profiles, the additional fee per roll can be 15 euros more than for a straight bar. According to the buyer, the current offers to Austria also do not vary much in thickness. Thus, it is impossible to track the difference in the base price.

As for the new offers for a natural candy bar from Italy, one customer reported a price increase of 10-20 euros since last week. For customers of mills in southern Austria, located near Lake Garda, at a relatively short distance, this means that the base prices will be around 350 euros. According to him, discounts in other places can be 15 euros or more.
