British Steel has announced that it has played a key role in the construction of one of Scotland's most significant renewable energy infrastructure projects, the £350 million underwater cable plant at the port of Nigg, operated by Sumitomo Electric U.

The company has supplied more than 2,000 tons of structural steel profiles for the plant, which will produce high-voltage underwater power cables needed for offshore wind farms and power grid connections.

Construction progress and scope of work

The project is in full swing, the installation of metal structures is the first of the construction of four planned buildings is already underway. The manufacture and installation of the steel structure is carried out by a subcontractor from the UK, BHC, which also manufactures metal decking, concrete coating, cladding and bulging flame retardants before shipment to the facility.

After the construction is completed, the plant, which is scheduled to open in 2026, will be ready for operation. This is expected to create around 330 jobs across the supply chain, significantly boosting the economy of the Scottish Highlands.
