German crude steel production decreased by 13.7% in July%

According to data published by the German Federation of Steel Producers (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl), pressure on steel production in Germany remained in July 2025. The total volume of steel production in the country decreased by 13.7% compared to the same period last year, amounting to approximately 2.72 million tons.

A significant part of this decrease was caused by a reduction in production at the blast furnace converter plant (oxygen converter steel production). Production of oxygen steel in July decreased by 19.6%, amounting to just under 1.9 million tons.

In contrast, electric arc furnace (EDP) production, which depends on scrap and electric power, showed a slight increase. EDP-based steel production increased by 4% and reached 0.82 million tons. However, this growth is seen as a limited recovery, as it was achieved from a low base.

Pig iron production also declined sharply in July, falling by 18.3% to 1.74 million tons. Meanwhile, the production of hot-rolled steel products decreased by 4.9% to 2.47 million tons.

In the first seven months of 2025, total steel production in Germany decreased by 12.1% year-on-year to 19.83 million tons. During this period, steel production in converter production decreased by 16% to 13.34 million tons, while production in electric steelmaking decreased by 2.8% to 6.49 million tons. Pig iron production decreased by 15% to 12.38 million tons, and hot-rolled steel - by 7.8% to 17.75 million tons.
