Monthly steel production in Germany continues to fall

According to the latest data provided by the Wirtschaftsvereinigung (WV) Stahl Steel Producers Federation, steel production at German plants in July 2025 was 13.7% lower than in July 2024, amounting to 2.7 million tons.

The gap year-on-year was as high as in June, which was minus 15.9%, Kallanish notes. The gap widened over the course of the year.

Although W.

V. Stahl does not provide an explanation, the trend suggests that the US protective duty policy has affected the activities of German factories, as a similar trend was noted in Austria (see Kallanish of July 28, 2025).

It is very likely that the US restrictions and the change in trade flows have led to an increase in the share of imports to Europe, while the export business has declined.

WV noted that the picture is quite ambiguous when looking at production routes. Crude steel production at the oxygen blast furnace production in July decreased by as much as 19.6% to 1.9 million tons, while electric steel production increased by 2.8% to 821,000 tons. However, as V. explains:

V. Stahl, this increase is due to the very low production of EDP a year ago.
