Swedish SSAB is preparing the ground for the construction of an environmentally friendly steel plant in Lulea

Swedish specialty steel manufacturer SSAB has announced the official start of construction of its new environmentally friendly steel plant in Lulea, marking a historic milestone in Sweden's transition to fossil fuel-free steel production. The 4.5 billion euro investment project is expected to be operational by the end of 2029, reducing total carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden by seven percent.

Ebba Bush, Sweden's Minister of Energy, Business and Industry, called the project "a historic step for Swedish industry," highlighting her role in strengthening Sweden's industrial leadership and commitment to combating climate change.

SSAB CEO Johnny Shestrem added that the company is building the most electrified steel mill in the world, combining innovation with efficiency to reduce costs, reduce lead times, and increase flexibility. Replacing the blast furnace will significantly eliminate Lulea's carbon dioxide emissions.

Steel mill in Luleå will be equipped with:

Two electric arc furnaces (EDP) with continuous scrap supply to reduce energy consumption and reduce nitrogen oxidesAdvanced technology of secondary metallurgyIntegrated hot rolling mill and cold rolling complexEquipment for galvanizing, continuous annealing and advanced finishing

The plant will use sponge iron, which does not contain fossil fuels, and recycled scrap, which will reduce carbon emissions by 3 million tons annually.

The company has advanced environmental characteristics:

Energy efficiency:Continuous scrap feed to minimize energy consumption

Cleaner air: reduced formation of nitrogen oxides

Heat recovery: excess heat is supplied to the Lulea district heating system

After commissioning, the Lulea mill will produce hot-rolled strips up to 2,100 mm wide and 1.3 mm to 25.4 mm thick, as well as rolls weighing up to 40 tons.

These technical characteristics ensure competitiveness in the global market. and the ability to serve advanced industries that require high-quality steel.
