Morocco and the Netherlands cooperate in the supply of environmentally friendly hydrogen to Europe

Morocco and the Netherlands plan to supply renewable hydrogen produced in Morocco to steel and heavy industry enterprises in the Netherlands as part of the Green Hydrogen Bridge project. This initiative is expected to play a key role in ensuring the transition of the steel sector to low-carbon production, contributing to the achievement of the European carbon neutrality goals by 2050.

Thomas Olejniczak, head of the Climate and Energy project in the Netherlands, said: "By 2050, we will need 300 to 500 petajoules of renewable hydrogen. Hydrogen will replace coal in the steel and chemical sectors and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in industry."

Morocco, which has rich solar and wind resources, can provide cheap renewable energy, making it a reliable supplier to the Dutch steel industry. The geographical proximity and short sea routes reduce transportation costs, making Morocco a natural center for the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen in Northwestern Europe. Morocco's largest investment, the Jorf hydrogen platform, which received a grant of 30 million euros from the German KfW PtX foundation, will start producing 100,000 tons of environmentally friendly ammonia per year in 2026, providing hydrogen for steel production.

The port of Rotterdam is preparing the necessary infrastructure for the import of hydrogen and its derivatives. The port facilities will be integrated with the Hydrogen Netherlands network and the Delta Rhine corridor to ensure uninterrupted supply to industrial clusters in the Netherlands and Germany. In the short term, supplies of ammonia and methanol will be used, and in the long term, pipelines are planned to be connected to reduce costs. Joint research and development and certification processes will ensure traceability and sustainability of hydrogen supplies.

The projected Dutch demand for hydrogen by 2050 opens up new investment opportunities for Moroccan producers. The partnership will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Europe's steel sector and enable Morocco to expand its production of environmentally friendly hydrogen worldwide.
