The ArcelorMittal Luxembourg SteelUp project is nearing completion

ArcelorMittal victory! The project at the Belval plant in Luxembourg is entering its final phase, and according to a source close to the company, the commissioning of a new electric arc furnace is scheduled for the end of 2025.

The final stage began in mid-October with the shutdown of the existing EDP to carry out work on the new equipment. Reconstruction of an abandoned field! The project is aimed at modernizing the Belval plant and transferring the production of semi-finished products supplied to the Rodange variety plant. The Belval plant will be equipped with a new EDP, a vacuum degassing unit and an upgraded continuous casting line. The goal of the modernization is to increase energy efficiency and increase steel production capacity by almost 15%, Kallanish notes.

Thanks to the new EDP, which replaced the plant that has been in operation since 1997, ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg will become self-sufficient in steel production, fully covering the needs for finished products in the Grand Duchy as soon as the new equipment reaches full capacity, the source confirms.

The project includes a digital arc furnace "without people on the floor" with increased safety, reduced energy consumption by 15% and increased productivity of heavy sections by 15%. The new vacuum degassing system will reduce the amount of dissolved gas. The plant will introduce a continuous casting system for new grades of high-carbon steel and heavier beam blanks.

The scrap metal bins will be enlarged to fill the furnace in one operation, which will increase the productivity of steel smelting in each cycle. The project will also include the construction of a new 150 m2 platform with a 100-ton hot briquetted cast iron supply system. Imported HBI used for the production of semi-finished steel Rodange products is stored in a bunker next to a scrap metal warehouse. This makes it possible to produce metallurgical materials that were previously available only in blast furnaces.

The upgrade will help achieve certified low-carbon steel production levels of less than 300 kg per ton, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 200,000 tons per year. The Belval plant will receive the XCarb marking for rails manufactured at Plant A.

The cost of the new Belval electric motor is about 67 million euros ($77.9 million), of which about 15 million euros are funded by government subsidies.

ArcelorMittal Luxembourg includes facilities in Bellevale, Differdange and Rodange. The Belval concern includes an electric steelmaking plant and two rolling mills. The steel mill produces semi-finished products, mainly intended for the Belval medium-body mill and line A in Rodange. New electric steelmaking plant
