Car production in Germany decreased in October

According to the VDA Automobile Association, passenger car production on German assembly lines reached 353,600 units in October, which is 4% lower than in the same month last year.

Compared to the same period last year, this continues the downward trend, Kallanish notes. However, in January-October, production increased by 1% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 3.5 million units.

However, compared to the pre-crisis year of 2019, the volume of production in 2025 remains 12% lower compared to the previous year.

Last month, passenger car exports fell short of last year's figure. The 277,500 brand new passenger cars exported from German production facilities decreased by 1% year-on-year. In January-October, exports of passenger cars reached 2.7 million units, which corresponds to the level of the previous year. Ten months later, exports were still 10% below the pre-crisis level in 2019.

The VDA publishes data on the production of electric vehicles in October: 83,390 electric vehicles were produced in Germany, which is 52% more than last year, which is a new production record. The German electric vehicle market has grown by 47% this year, reaching 683,400 new registrations.

.

The VDA estimates that about 1.7 million electric vehicles will be produced in Germany this year.

German automaker Volkswagen recently announced that it is continuing production despite a shortage of semiconductors and ongoing supply problems around the world (see Kallanish passim). However, given the changing circumstances, short-term effects on VW production cannot be ruled out.

The automaker is exploring alternative sources of supply to minimize possible impacts on its supply chain.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has previously warned that virtually all automakers in the region have felt the effects of the conflict between Dutch chipmaker Nexperia and China (see Kallanish passim). According to the association, Nexperia has informed customers that it cannot guarantee continued chip shipments.
