ArcelorMittal SSC completes modernization of Fimi cross-cutting line in Krakow

ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centers (SSC) Europe, the Polish division of Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal, has announced the completion of a major upgrade of its Fimi cross-cutting line in Krakow through the introduction of hybrid straightening technology, which significantly improves material quality and production stability. The project makes it possible to produce steel sheets with stricter flatness tolerances and reduced internal stresses, which increases the safety and efficiency of thermal cutting processes.

Comprehensive modernization

The comprehensive project, worth more than 29 million Polish zlotys ($8.08 million), included the purchase and installation of a state-of-the-art stretcher straightening machine, modernization of the electrical infrastructure, advanced measuring systems and integration with an existing production line.

Thanks to the new technology, ArcelorMittal SSC can annually supply about 150,000 tons of sheet metal with improved performance characteristics to the European market, focusing on such sought-after industries as railway, automotive and construction machinery.

Tests of various steel grades, including S355JR, S355MC, S500MC and S700MC, showed that 92 percent of the samples met the highest Laser Premium standard, while all of them met the requirements of Laser Classic after straightening and thermal cutting. These indicators demonstrate the effectiveness of the new straightening process in reducing deformation and increasing the reliability of the material.

The project managers emphasized that the innovation not only increases the stability and predictability of processes, but also strengthens the competitiveness of ArcelorMittal SSC and provides tangible benefits to customers, such as increased production reliability.
