Italian long products demonstrate acceptable performance by 2025: market
Long products prices in Italy are expected to remain stable in the coming months, despite the fact that factories continue to insist on an increase, Kallanish notes.
After a short-term improvement in demand, when large distributors increased sales volumes before the Christmas holidays, silence reigned in the market. The price increases expected by manufacturers of rebar and long products did not lead to the conclusion of contracts, as a result of which the overall price level did not change.
January may cause some price increases related to CBAM. European wire rod manufacturers are trying to raise prices, but so far they are meeting resistance. In recent weeks, the cost of Italian wire rod has increased by only about 10 euros per ton (11.69 US dollars per ton), as competition from other European suppliers supports competitiveness in the market.
Two agents reported that their business was satisfactory in 2025. Both reported lower sales and revenue at merchant bar, although this was offset by improvements in the quality of other products such as corrugated board and wire rod, whose sales volumes increased overall.
The base price for Merchant bars remains at 250-260 euros per ton, which is stable compared to the beginning of December, which is equivalent to 670-680 euros per ton, including additional sizes. The price of wire rod for drawing is about 580 euros per ton, while the cost of imported material from other European countries is about 15 euros per ton lower.
Grain prices have hardly changed compared to the beginning of December, despite the price increase by European producers by 20-30 euros per ton. The price of rebar of the first category is still about 730 euros per ton, while the asking price is about 750 euros per ton.
Demand for Italian fittings is starting to decline in the run-up to Christmas. Prices are now 280-290 euros per ton from the factory, which corresponds to 550-560 euros per ton, including additional sizes.
