The new MIDA plant in Albania will be the first in Europe

Italian technology provider Danieli has confirmed a contract with Kurum International for the installation of a new MIDA (micromill Danieli) installation in Elbasan, Albania. According to Danieli, this is the first MIDA installation from scratch in Europe.

The launch is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.

The project will be based on the MIDA — QLP concept for the production of high-quality long products, Kallanish notes from a statement by Daniali. It is based on Danieli's patented OctoCaster and an innovative mill layout designed for endless casting and rolling.

The annual production capacity of the new enterprise will exceed 700,000 tons of deformed bars and compact coils. Danieli's delivery package includes a melting shop with a 75-ton electric arc furnace equipped with an ECS continuous scrap loading system, a 75-ton ladle furnace, material transportation systems and a gas purification plant.

Casting will be carried out on a 12-meter radius continuous casting machine with an octagonal shape, which ensures stable continuous casting at a speed of more than 7 m/min. The rolling mill will consist of caseless crates and a high-speed finishing unit that will produce straight bars with a diameter of 10 to 32 mm and wound rolls with a diameter of 8 to 25 mm with an individual roll weight of up to 5 tons.

According to Danieli, the MIDA — QLP technology makes it possible to produce truly "green" steel, while ensuring minimal costs for processing scrap metal into finished long products, which ensures high production sustainability.

In December, media reports mentioned Kurum International's investments in the construction of a plant in Elbasan worth about 150 million euros ($175.27 million).

The Danieli micromill, or MIDA, is a Danieli-patented concept for the production of long products based on scrap metal, which uses a compact, endless casting and rolling process to reduce capital costs, energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The project has been expanded to a production capacity of 700,000 tons per year or more, allowing it to be implemented from scratch in Europe for the first time, as decarbonization and cost increases intensify.

Danieli announced that it has supplied or operates 29 MIDA installations worldwide, in the United States, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
