Sweden is building a dam gate made of steel that does not contain fossil fuels
Vattenfall will design the dam gates for the Stornorfors hydroelectric power station near Umeå in northeastern Sweden, which will be made of steel developed as part of the HYBRIT joint venture, Kallanish reports.
The facility will weigh 120 tons, be 21 meters high and 10 meters wide. It is used to regulate the flow of water in hydroelectric power plants. It is planned that it will be installed in 2028 and will become operational in 2029.
"The construction itself, of course, is large-scale, but logistics and installation will also require careful planning. For example, such large components will probably require special transport," says Stefan Tirbo, project manager at Vattenfall.
The service life of the dam gates exceeds 70 years, which makes their replacement quite rare.
