Prices for Polish rebar are rising amid rising prices for scrap metal and energy resources
Prices in Poland for domestic steel fittings rose in the week to Friday, January 16, amid rising production costs associated with increased scrap and energy costs, Fastmarkets sources said.
Fastmarkets' weekly price estimate for steel rebar, domestic, cpt, Poland, on Friday was 2480-2550 zlotys ($682-702) per ton, compared with 2400-2450 zlotys per ton in the previous week.
The estimate corresponds to some estimates of achievable levels, which were announced in the range of 2480-2550 zlotys per ton without VAT, while the upper limit of the range is supported by the transaction at 2540-2550 zlotys per ton without VAT.
The sources said that some manufacturers tried to increase the supply or indicated that more profitable offers were being prepared, but during the evaluation period, the price level of these offers was not reported.
"There are rumors that prices may rise, but it is still unclear what will happen," said a source at the distribution company. "Steel mills have to set prices based on rising prices for scrap metal and energy resources," the source added.
But the source said manufacturers would have to see if buyers would accept any price increases.
Meanwhile, a source in trading circles said that the market mood remains calm and "there is not much demand," as low temperatures in the winter months affect market activity.
Wire rod prices remained at the same level, and no new trading activity was reported during the week.
Fastmarkets' weekly price estimate for domestic steel rod (drawing quality) supplied to Poland on Friday was 2600-2650 zlotys per ton, unchanged week to week.
