UMB Steel orders technology to revive production in Ocelo-Rocha

UMB Steel, a Romanian company, has signed a contract with SMS for the supply of the Continuous Mill Technology (CMT) 700 mill, which will produce 700,000 tons of bars, compact coils and wire rods per year in continuous operation.

The new installation, the first in Europe, modernizes the existing infrastructure of the Ocelo Roche plant, ensuring uninterrupted production of long products from scrap by continuously feeding cast products from the smelter to the rolling mill, SMS Kallanish reports. The time of the technological process from the workpiece to the finished product is about 120 minutes, which guarantees minimal carbon dioxide emissions and high production efficiency.

UMB Steel strives to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly building materials, primarily by supporting UMB group's road construction activities.

SMS will supply equipment from a single source, including mechanical, electrical and automated systems for the integration of the new foundry and rolling mill into the existing steelmaking complex in Ocelo Rocha.

The plant, which operates in an electric arc furnace, has not been operating since 2012, when it was called Mechel Ductile Steel Hotel Rosu under the former Russian owner.

The new mill will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30%, as no natural gas is required to reheat the billet. It is designed for a flexible production process thanks to a combination of a vertical compact roll forming system (VCC) for coils weighing up to 8 tons, a wire rod production line from high-carbon structural materials obtained by the "billet to billet" method, and a straight bar processing site, the SMS message says.

No information was provided on the status of the EDP or the date of commissioning of the new mill.

The UMB group road construction conglomerate, owned by Dorinel Umbrarescu, acquired the Ocelo Rocu steel mill at the end of 2024. The company also recently agreed to purchase the Romanian metallurgical plant in Hunedoara from ArcelorMittal.
