Blastr offers to purchase special steels in the UK

Norwegian-British producer of environmentally friendly steel Blastr is among the contenders for the acquisition of Speciality Steels UK (SSUK), formerly owned by Liberty Steel, according to British media reports.

In August last year, the High Court forcibly liquidated SS UK Limited.

The reports also say that Blastr is considering moving its holding company from Norway to the UK.

SSUK has factories in Rotherham and Stocksbridge. According to the website of the former owner of Liberty Steel UK, the Rotherham plant is equipped with two electric arc furnaces (EDP) with a total annual capacity of 1.1 million tons of liquid steel.

Currently, Blastr does not have production facilities, and in 2023, the company announced the launch of a new project for the production of up to 2.5 million tons of carbon-reduced sheet steel in Inkoo, Finland. Among other installations, the steel mill planned to build a pellet plant in the UK to produce about 6 million tons of DR pellets per year.

Blastr will produce steel with an ultra-low CO2 content, whose emissions are 90% lower than those of conventional steel for applications 1-3, according to the company's website. The company also provides an estimate of the CO2 content of conventional steel, which is 2.6 tons of CO2 per ton of steel, which means that when producing environmentally friendly steel at a new plant, CO2 emissions can be as low as 0.26 tons of CO2/ton.

Arabian Gulf Steel Industries (AGSI), headquartered in the UAE, and 7 Steel UK, producers of low-carbon steel, were also identified as contenders for SSUK. 7 Steel UK acquired 100% of the shares of Celsa Steel UK and Celsa Nordic from the Spanish company Celsa Group in 2024.

A Blastr representative declined to comment on the matter.
