Spanish consortium to build electric arc furnace for ArcelorMittal

A 50-50 consortium of Spanish companies Técnicas Reunidas and Idom has begun providing support for the transformation and decarbonization of the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Dunkirk in northern France following the conclusion of a contract for the construction of a new steel mill at the site.

The consortium's work under the EPCM contract will include project management, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing at the steelmaking plant, including the development of an electric arc furnace (EDP) and a ladle furnace (PP) for secondary refining.

The project also includes the development of support systems and infrastructure, site preparation, and subcontracting certain research and services to third parties.

The new facilities will be integrated into the existing steel mill, which will lead to a significant transformation of the company's steel complex and, above all, will make a significant contribution to decarbonization.

When using a mixture of scrap, direct reduction cast iron (HBI/DRI) and cast iron smelting, 0.6 million tons of CO2 will be released per ton of steel produced in the new electric arc furnace, which is three times less than when using a blast furnace. The production capacity of the EDP will be 2 million tons of steel per year. The start of operation of the new facilities is scheduled for 2029.

This contract is based on work previously performed by Técnicas Reunidas in consortium with Idom at earlier stages of the project, in which it provided consulting and engineering services upon pre-order.- terminate the engineering design contract.
