Feralpi Stahl to increase Riesa plant capacity to 1.3 million tons

Italian steel company Feralpi Group, the German subsidiary of Feralpi Stahl, which manufactures rebar, has announced plans to increase the annual steel production capacity at its Riza plant from about 1 million tons to 1.3 million tons. The expansion takes place one year after the commissioning of the company's new rolling mill, which is gradually increasing production volumes.

The new bobbin rolling mill helps to increase productivity

According to the company, the new bobbin rolling mill allows Feralpi Stahl to enter a new product segment focused on automated applications. The plant was officially opened on May 15, 2025. Initially, the production worked in one shift, but now it has been switched to a two-shift mode.

At the same time, operational tests are continuing together with Italian equipment supplier Danieli, and the final acceptance of the facility is scheduled for this summer. Feralpi Stahl stated that the process of increasing production is proceeding according to schedule, while product quality and process stability are constantly improving.

The total capacity of the plant may reach 1.3 million tons.

The Riza plant currently has an operating rolling mill with a production capacity of about 850,000 tons of structural steel products per year. As production continues to expand, the capacity of the new rolling mill is expected to gradually increase by another 400,000 to 450,000 tons per year. As a result, the total annual capacity of the steel plant is projected to increase to 1.3 million tons.

Three-shift operation is planned from 2027.

Feralpi Stahl stated that it intends to support the planned increase in production capacity by switching to a three-shift operation starting in 2027, depending on market conditions and operational progress. The company also noted that additional investments in scrap recycling infrastructure are planned as part of a broader expansion strategy. In addition to the expansion of the rolling mill, the program includes investments in scrap recycling systems, energy infrastructure, and larger-scale production modernization projects.
