Duferco develops logistics near Sicilian factory
Italian long products manufacturer Duferco Group is expanding its logistics center in Sicily with a plant in Giammoro, Messina province.
The subsidiary Duferco Terminal Mediterraneo has fully launched the terminal in Giammoro, enhancing its role as a strategic intermodal platform for commercial and industrial transportation in the Mediterranean.
Logistics services for the Pittini Group remain the cornerstone of the terminal's operations, with an average of 6,000 tons of metal products per vessel. The service is provided by NovaAlgoma Short Sea Carriers, Sider Unicorn, and covers the entire logistics chain from sea transportation to unloading, processing, storage and transfer to the terminal's railway warehouse, the company said in a statement obtained by Kallanish.
In May, the terminal's railway connection was fully operational, which made it possible to deliver and store various cargoes, including steel beams, which further expanded the terminal's intermodal capabilities.
In May, the terminal accepted the first order from MV X-Press Sagarmala, launching a new weekly X-Press Feeders service connecting Giammoro with Algeciras, Tangier and southern Italy.
In 2024, Duferco received a concession for the commercial operation of the port terminal, for which the company submitted a development project for the provision of naval and logistics services. This is part of a plan for the reconversion and diversification of the Giammoro steel mill, which Duferco is implementing with a total investment of 95 million euros ($110 million), secured by a government guarantee from SACE (see Kallanish passim).
