EUROFER: Steel exports from the EU to the US decreased by 34% a year after Trump imposed 50% duties
According to new data released by the European Steel Manufacturers Association (EUROFER), European steel exports to the United States have declined by a third since the US administration imposed 50 percent steel duties.
The association reported that steel exports from the EU to the United States decreased by 34 percent year-on-year in the three quarters following the imposition of tariffs on June 4, 2025. During this period, export volumes decreased from 2.93 million tons to 1.94 million tons.
Tariffs continue to put pressure on the European steel sector
The 50% tariffs were introduced in accordance with the provisions of Section 232 of the U.
S. Law and were later expanded to cover a number of steel industries. According to EUROFER, steel and aluminum remain the only industries still subject to the full 50 percent tariff rate in the United States, with these measures still affecting both European steel producers and production supply chains.
The association said the sharp decline in exports demonstrates the continued impact of tariffs on transatlantic steel trade.
The EU-US Trade Agreement includes provisions on protective measures
The data was released shortly after EU member states approved legislation implementing the latest EU-US trade agreement.
According to the agreement, the European Commission has the right to suspend part of the deal if the United States continues to apply tariffs above 15% after the end of 2026 on derivative products containing steel and aluminum, which became subject to American tariffs after June 4, 2025.
The agreement also provides for further discussions between Brussels and Washington regarding:
- Tariff Quota Solutions (TRQ),
- Steel and aluminum trade,
- Cooperation in solving the problem of global overcapacity.
EUROFER requires a permanent solution
Axel Eggert, CEO of EUROFER, these data clearly illustrate the impact of tariffs on European exports and indicate that market access issues remain unresolved a year after the measures come into force.
According to Eggert, both sides are interested in maintaining strong transatlantic cooperation, but he stressed that balanced trade conditions have not yet been restored.
