The industry Committee is pushing for a broader expansion of CBAM
MEPs from the ITRE Parliamentary Committee on Industry voted on June 24 to significantly expand the range of products covered by the EU Carbon Boundary Regulation Mechanism (CBAM).
The compromise amendments, based on EPP, C and D, Extend, and Greens groups, will expand the mechanism beyond those products proposed by the commission and include a wide range of basic and semi-finished products, household appliances, kitchen equipment, construction and handling equipment, vehicles and equipment, and industrial goods.
The temporary suspension clause and the reference to international carbon credits, a provision that has proven controversial, are also excluded from the text.
This further strengthens measures against attempts to circumvent CBAM and calls for the creation of key performance indicators to assess the effectiveness of the EU's mechanism for protecting manufacturers from international competition.
The ENVI Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, which is leading the work on this document, will be free to include or ignore the ITRE recommendations when adopting its report on July 6.
