The European Steel Producers Association EUROFER has called for measures that will decarbonize the European steel industry without compromising its competitiveness, as well as preserve production, investment and employment in Europe. The statement was made after a meeting in the European Parliament, which was attended by about 100 deputies, representatives of steel companies and other stakeholders. The participants discussed how the European steel industry can reduce emissions while maintaining its industrial base. EUROFER noted that high energy prices and global competition continue to put pressure on steel producers in Europe. According to the association, the EU steel and metals action plan should create conditions under which companies can remain competitive and continue to invest in the European economy. The Association also stressed the need for predictable demand for low-carbon steel to support investment in decarbonization projects. In this context, EUROFER pointed to the Law on Accelerating Industrial Production and measures to encourage the use of low-carbon steel in the automotive industry as possible tools for creating sales markets for steel produced in Europe. In addition, EUROFER stated that the upcoming decisions on the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will be key to preventing carbon leakage and maintaining the competitiveness of the European steel industry. The association believes that Europe's transition to a "green" economy should strengthen the region's industrial base and support economic growth, rather than weaken European industry. Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, said that Europe's industrial strength and sustainable future must develop simultaneously. According to her, the EU must create conditions for industrial transformation, and companies must ensure investment, innovation and employment. EUROFER President Henrik Adam welcomed the progress made by the EU, including the steel and metals action plan, but said additional steps were needed for a broader industrial transformation. He stressed that Europe needs to strengthen industries along the entire value chain and create a competitive Made in Europe industrial ecosystem, while significantly reducing energy costs. According to him, affordable and competitive energy is necessary for European industry to reduce emissions while maintaining production and investment in the region. Adam added that the European steel industry is ready to contribute
