The Italian trade association Assofermet, which represents companies working with steel, scrap and metals, said that the reopening of the Taranto steel plant, formerly known as Ilva, is essential for the entire steel supply chain in Italy. According to the organization, the company needs continuity of production and full transparency of decisions about its future.
Assofermet, part of the Confcommercio system, issued a statement on the fate of the Taranto plant, which is operated by the Italian company Acciaierie d'Italia (ADI) under emergency management.
The Association welcomed the efforts of the Italian Government related to the Taranto industrial area and expressed support for initiatives aimed at reviving this historic metallurgical enterprise.
Assofermet noted that against the background of stricter restrictions on steel imports from non—EU countries, the Taranto plant may become an increasingly important domestic supplier for the association's member companies.
Concerns remain about the future of the hot redistribution
The Association said it shares concerns about the future of the redevelopment zone, which is managed by ADI under emergency administration. Assofermet stressed that any changes at the plant may affect related industries, and the outcome of the current tender is still uncertain.
In this context, the preservation of the continuity of production in Taranto and the protection of jobs are identified as priorities. The association also referred to the decision of the Milan Court of Appeal of July 27, according to which the site of the hot redevelopment should be closed by October 28.
Assofermet intends to join the initiative of the Federacciai consortium
Another topic raised by Assofermet was the initiative of a consortium officially established by the Italian steel manufacturers association Federacciai on August 18.
Representing the steel production, trade and processing sector, Assofermet stated that she would like to participate in this initiative and receive up-to-date information about its development due to the possible consequences for the industry.
The association stressed that the conditions for joining the consortium should be public, accessible and transparent, and expressed their willingness to participate in institutional discussions on this issue.
Assofermet believes that adhering to these principles is important to protect the industry and all parties that may be affected by this process. In addition, the organization noted that the restoration of the Taranto plant could be an important opportunity to increase the competitiveness of the entire steel supply chain.
