Center-right and center-left MEPs have proposed an amendment to the draft extension of the CBAM border carbon fee mechanism. The initiative provides for lowering the current application threshold from 50 to 5 tons per year.
The current limit was agreed in 2025 to simplify the operation of the system and limit its effect to imports that exceed the established annual volume.
In a separate amendment, about 40 MEPs from various political groups, from the left to the EPP, propose to ease the conditions for granting temporary exclusion from the CBAM for the most remote regions of the EU. We are talking, in particular, about the Azores and the Canary Islands.
This provision is included in the report of the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment (ENVI). The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) also proposed extending the CBAM to more types of steel products to reduce the risk of bypassing the levy.
The European Parliament is due to determine its position on the CBAM expansion proposal on September 15. On the same day, deputies will also vote to exclude methanol from the scope of the mechanism.
