Swiss Steel Group said it had signed an agreement with Canada Nickel Company that provides for the possibility of a long-term strategic partnership to supply low-carbon steel semi-finished products from Canada.
The partnership is intended to combine Canada’s access to mineral resources and low-carbon energy with Swiss Steel Group’s expertise in specialty steel production and its customer network in Europe. Under the proposed agreement, the company expects to secure exclusive access to around 1 million tonnes of low-carbon semi-finished products annually from 2030. These will include billets and blooms, which will undergo further processing at Swiss Steel Group’s specialty steel plants.
Swiss Steel Group CEO Frank Koch said the planned cooperation would help the company optimize its production infrastructure and ensure flexible access to competitively priced low-carbon semi-finished products. He said the companies would continue working to establish a long-term partnership that is commercially and technically viable.
NetZero Metals to supply low-carbon semi-finished products
Supplies are planned to be organized by NetZero Metals, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canada Nickel. It intends to process concentrate from the Crawford Nickel deposit into finished nickel products.
NetZero Metals also plans to process nickel-chromium magnetite concentrate into low-carbon stainless and specialty steel semi-finished products, potentially achieving zero carbon emissions.
