Turkish steel exports to the European Union may be taxed \
The European Association of Steel Producers (EUROFER) welcomed with enthusiasm the start of the EU registration of imports of hot rolled steel from Turkey.
"This could potentially lead to a retroactive application of anti-dumping duties, which are planned to be introduced in January 2021," the press service of EUROFER noted.
Subject to the rules set out in the main provisions on trade protection, import registration is a condition for the retroactive application of anti-dumping possible provisional duties in January.
Other than that, registration helps to avoid uncontrolled jumps in imports before the introduction of duties. Now, almost any imports entering the EU from Turkey since November 14, 2020 may be subject to anti-dumping duties in the future.
“Anti-dumping procedures are implemented gradually and take a long time,” said Axel Eggert, CEO of EUROFER. “While the fourteen-month investigation continues, imports will remain unstable and could quickly disrupt the EU market. Thus, registration is an important tool to ensure the effectiveness of EU trade protection instruments. ”
A request to register Turkish steel imports was submitted to EUROFER in September 2020 after an anti-dumping complaint was filed in May 2020. Conclusions in this anti-dumping case are due in January 2020.
