Heads of European carmakers met with the Vice President of the European Commission for the Green Deal
Under the auspices of the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), European leaders met with Frans Timmermans, European Commission Vice President for the European Green Deal, to constructively discuss climate change and CO 2 .
“EU politicians and the automotive industry share a vision of green neutrality by 2050 as part of the European Green Deal,” said Oliver Zipse, President of ACEA and CEO of BMW. “But the green deal should live up to its name; we need a real “deal” between our industry and the EU governments to achieve the overarching goal of reducing CO 2 emissions from the transport sector. Every available technology has a role to play along the way.
“We are bringing the technology to market at a very fast pace and striving to produce more vehicles with zero emissions. But we need governments to build charging infrastructure at the same rapid pace. We are pleased that Mr. Timmermans has realized that these tasks are internally interrelated, ”said Tsipse.
Frans Timmermans noted that the transition to near-zero emissions transport is a huge challenge that the European auto industry must cope with.
“Our policy will be to support the transition: stricter emission standards to encourage the use of cleaner vehicles, and investment in charging infrastructure and battery manufacturing to support already rapid growth. By managing this transition, we will make it fair. And together we will make electric driving available to everyone, ”Timmermans said.
