The Korean company Posco International plans to participate in projects for the reconstruction of Ukraine. In particular, green metallurgy and the development of the latest energy infrastructure are considered among the priority areas.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy.
Future cooperation in both the private and public sectors was discussed during a meeting between First Deputy Minister of Economy Alexei Sobolev and the management of Posco International Ukraine.
Representatives of the Korean company noted that they already have experience in implementing projects in Ukraine, in particular in the agricultural and energy sectors. But now they are looking for ways to participate more actively in the recovery.
One of the nearest projects that Posco International Ukraine intends to implement in Ukraine is the construction of an RDF–fueled thermal power plant in Odessa (Refuse-derived fuel). This initiative is worth a total of 106 million dollars. They want to implement it in cooperation with the Korean Foundation for Economic Development and Cooperation (EDCF).
According to him, within the framework of the existing agreements, these can only be public initiatives from a Single Project Portfolio. However, in the future, the Ministry hopes to expand cooperation with the Korean government and to be able to attract preferential loans from the Fund and for the private sector.
One of the priority areas that Posco International plans to develop in Ukraine is green metallurgy. The company has more than twenty years of experience in this field and is considering both investments in the Ukrainian sector and technological and advisory assistance to the Ukrainian metallurgical business aimed at attracting expertise, advanced technologies and access to global markets.
Sobolev noted that Ukraine has large reserves of iron ore, experience in the metallurgical industry and cheaper energy capacities compared to many countries. Therefore, there is the potential to become a leading producer of environmentally friendly steel.
The parties agreed on further ongoing consultations between the Ministry of Economy and the Korean business on the practical implementation of the green metallurgy project in Ukraine. Ahead is the feasibility study of the project and the discussion of cooperation with Ukrainian companies.
