Fuat Tosyali, Chairman of the Board of the Turkish Tosyalı Holding, called on the European Union to abolish steel import quotas for countries with environmentally sustainable production, such as Turkey and Algeria. He stated this on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Daily Sabah reports.
Tosali believes that the EU should allow access to low-emission producers to ensure long-term sustainability for its own processing sectors and promote a "green" transition. He added that although the bloc's measures are mainly aimed at China, they also apply to Turkey, "which undermines the future of the European Union's steel industry."
Tosyalı Holding is currently the largest steel producer in Turkey and is one of the 50 leading steel companies in the world.
The global steel industry has been undergoing a constant structural transformation over the past 5 years, Fuat Tosali recalled. China accounts for about half of the world's steel production, further exacerbating imbalances in the sector.
Fuat Tosali expressed the opinion that the steel industry is one of the main factors contributing to global warming, so governments should not support enterprises operating with outdated technologies with high emissions.
