GM's Silao plant in Mexico may go on strike on March 25
Workers at the General Motor (GM) automaker's Silao plant in Mexico may go on strike on March 25 due to the suspension this week of contract negotiations between the firm and the national independent Sinttia auto workers union.
GM suspended negotiations for a week after a three-week break. On March 3, Sinttia announced the start of negotiations, adding that the workers would strike on March 25.
According to Sinttia, Silao produces 300,000 vehicles per year.
Initially, the union asked GM to raise workers' salaries by 20%. According to Sinttia, GM's counteroffer was "well below its real capabilities." He added that the gap between Silao employees and their American counterparts "remains huge."
GM "conducts negotiations in good faith, with absolute respect for the union process and its representatives," the Argus reported. "Our goal is to maintain a cordial and constructive dialogue, always looking for common ground that will allow this process to move forward."
The firm is committed to achieving "a fair and sustainable agreement that will benefit our employees and be beneficial to all parties involved," the company added.
Cynthia reported that 90% of Silao's products are shipped to the United States, allowing GM to hold the highest market share in the United States since 2015.
