Tata Steel launches production of "green" steel from 100% scrap metal
Tata Steel Nederland has joined the EU's CiSMA (Circular Steel for mass Market Applications) initiative to develop high-quality steel produced exclusively from recycled scrap metal and using electric arc furnaces, Yieh reports.
This EU-funded project aims to reduce carbon emissions from sheet steel production by 70%. Using machine learning and digital models, researchers aim to clean up contaminated scrap metal and recover valuable materials, particularly copper, so that the final product meets the strict quality standards of traditional steel.
The consortium includes thirteen partners from five countries, and major brands such as Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional will test recycled steel in the manufacture of cars and household appliances.
These companies are looking to understand how higher levels of recycled materials affect production processes and contribute to lower emissions in supply chains.
Supported by a budget of almost 4.5 million euros under the Horizon Europe financing program, the collaboration should prove that circular steel can be used in mass industrial production.
