Podcast: Steel prices in Scandinavia supported by supply problems

Steel prices in Northern Europe are supported by expected supply constraints and rising costs, rather than a seasonal surge in demand, according to the MEP's "Market in Minutes" podcast.

Steel market analyst Adam Crooks joined MEPS Editor-in-Chief Tom Sharp to present an 11-minute overview of the steel market in Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the latest installment of the MEPS podcast "Talking about Steel."

Crooks is part of a team of MEPs who are communicating with steel market participants in the Scandinavian region to inform them about the addition to the European Steel review. He said that steel demand had not met expectations during the first four months of this year. However, supply problems have led to some restocking and some noticeable price increases. According to estimates by MEPs, in the first four months of 2026, prices for hot-rolled coils in the Nordic countries increased by an average of more than 10%.

"I think the main factors are the CBAM – with the exception of Norway, as they have not joined the EU scheme and will be developing their own from January next year – as well as the changes to EU protective quotas that will take place in July," said Crooks.

"From March to April, we observed a fairly significant increase in prices for flat products, and now, from April to May, they have somewhat stabilized. This is due to the fact that people have become more active in making purchases. The stock level is quite high right now."

Crooks added: "Long products are a little different in that we are seeing price increases again this month."
