Podcast: Trade policy determines the trends of the European stainless steel market
A new podcast by MEPs "The Market in minutes" showed that the growth of stainless steel purchases in the domestic market, caused by tougher trade protection measures, may be starting to slow down across Europe.
Michele Kirton, a stainless steel market analyst, in a conversation with Tom Sharp, the editor-in-chief of the MEP, presents a 15-minute overview of the European stainless steel market in the latest issue of the monthly podcast.
Kirton said that the concerns of stainless steel buyers about possible supply disruptions led to an increase in their purchases for several months. This was initially caused by the introduction of CBAM taxes in January, and then by expectations of lower tariff quotas - both in the EU and the United Kingdom – from July 1.
However, in a recent study for the European Parliament's Stainless Steel Review. Kirton said: We see that the volume of domestic orders is starting to decrease again, it is starting to slow down.
"Most of the materials ordered earlier this year are now starting to be delivered, and stocks among warehouse workers and distributors are starting to increase."
Kirton said demand for many stainless steel products remains "moderate." However, the steel-consuming sectors state: "Demand is a secondary factor to everything that is happening[with regard to stainless steel prices right now."
The MEP's new podcast The Market in Minutes, titled Policy-driven Trends Define the European Stainless steel Market., also addresses:
