Exports of thermal coal from the United States reached an annual maximum in March
U.S. thermal coal exports rose to an annual high of 3.4 million tons in March amid disruption to global trade flows after Russia launched a military sting operation in Ukraine.
According to official statistics, US coal shipments to other countries were 19.4% higher than the previous month.
YoY, U.S. thermal energy exports rose 32.9% last month. Of the thermal exports in March, 3 million tons accounted for bitumen, which is 25.1% more than the previous month, but 12% lower than the same period last year. Sub-bituminous shipments accounted for 420,795 tons of this volume, which is 10.5% less than in the previous month, but 13.3% more than last year.
The average monthly price of CIF Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp coal was $320.27 per tonne in March, up 61.8% month-on-month and 363% year-over-year.
U.S. coal prices averaged $508.91/tonne in March, up 40% from the previous month and up 246.5% from last year.
The cumulative export of steel products and heat from the United States amounted to 6.6 million tons, which is 2.1% more than in the previous month, but 3.5% less than last year. Cumulative coal exports since the beginning of the year were 17.4% higher than in the period of 2021.
