ALROSA recovered a 230-carat diamond - the largest in recent years

A unique diamond weighing over 230 carats was mined at the Udachnaya pipe on October 19. This is the largest gem-quality specimen discovered by ALROSA in more than three years.

The find weighing 232.4 carats has a yellowish tint. On the surface of the octahedral stone 40x39x23 mm in size, there are natural and man-made chips. It was recovered at factory # 12 of the Udachninsky mining and processing plant.

“Such large gem-quality crystals are extremely rare. Of course, they are found in ALROSA's fields, but they have not been in our history since 2016, when two diamonds of over 200 carats were mined, ”said Yevgeny Agureev, Deputy General Director of ALROSA. - We are looking forward to seeing a stone in the USO ALROSA for a detailed study and assessment. This is the second time the Udachnaya pipe has made such a gift to us - earlier in January a large diamond weighing 191.46 carats was mined there.

The Udachnaya kimberlite pipe, discovered in 1955, is one of the largest primary diamond deposits both in Yakutia and in the world. Since the beginning of development in 1967, this deposit has brought hundreds of the largest diamonds. In 9 months of 2019, the Udachnaya pipe produced 2.385 million carats of diamonds.
