Five people killed, 11 injured in collapse of a mine in Colombia
At least five people were killed, 11 injured Thursday in a mine collapse in the Cauca department of southwestern Colombia.
The incident took place in the city of Santander de Quiliciao. Mayor Lucy Guzman told local media that the mine had been shut down at the time of the collapse. The accident occurred when a group of people unauthorizedly descended into the mine. Rescue work is underway.
The regional emergency management said the mine did not meet safety standards. An investigation into the causes of the accident has begun.
