Illegal mining and logging in Ukraine will be monitored from space

Thanks to the cooperation of the State Space Agency of Ukraine and the Ministry of Environment, from now on illegal logging, mining, spontaneous landfills, as well as development of the coast of reservoirs will be monitored using satellite imagery.

According to the agency, this is a good prospect to develop those services that have long been operating in the advanced countries of the world and bring significant results in the form of billions of dollars saved by countering and preventing environmental crimes.

"The State Space Agency is always open to suggestions and evaluates cooperation between state bodies in the field of control and monitoring of the territory of Ukraine with a view to protecting state interests," the agency said.

Currently, the National Center for Control and Testing of Space Facilities of Ukraine is working on methods of using images in the activities of inspectors of the Ministry of Ecology in order to ensure the legality of the provided satellite data in courts.

This will be the next step in the implementation of information obtained through space observation of the Earth for the interests of national security and economy, summarized in the space agency of Ukraine.
