According to the state statistical office, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's largest steel production and processing state, has reduced production by about 20% over the past decade.
In 2025, the volume of crude steel and metal products production amounted to 45.8 million tons, which is 20.1% less than in 2015 and 6.4% lower than in 2024. The statistics take into account raw steel, as well as semi-finished products, rolled products and finished products produced by manufacturing enterprises. Thus, the figure of 45.8 million tons includes numerous cases of double counting throughout the value chain, the agency explains.
NRW's statistical methods differ from those used for national statistics by the W.
V. Stahl Association, which makes a clear distinction between raw steel, cast iron, and rolled products.
Sources at WV Stahl confirmed to Kallanish that a 20% drop over a ten-year period is likely.
NRW statistics also report that the average selling price in 2025 will be 786 euros per ton (896 US dollars per ton), which is 46.5% higher than in 2015, but 4.7% lower than the cost in 2024.
While these figures are not broken down by product group, they roughly correspond to Kallanish's published prices. In 2015, prices for hot-rolled coils in Northwestern Europe fell below 400 euros per ton for most of the year, while in 2024 they were generally higher than in 2025, when growth began only in the second half.
