ArcelorMittal Canada starts supplying XCarb carbon-free steel to General Motors
ArcelorMittal will supply carbon-reduced XCarb steel from an electric arc furnace (EAF) at the Dofasco plant. Shipments will begin this month.
The EAF has a capacity of 1.49 million tons per year, according to the Iron and Steel Association of the United States.
XCarb steel is produced with a scrap content of 70-90% , but does not use carbon offset to reduce carbon intensity.
The Dofasco plant is currently transitioning from predominantly integrated steel production in blast furnaces to steel production from direct reduced iron (HDG) and steel production in an electric arc furnace , which will replace the oxygen furnace with a capacity of 3 million tons per year with a steel plant in the EAF with a capacity of 2.54 million tons per year.
