The only nuclear power plant in Iowa will be turned into a solar farm
The Duane Arnold Energy Center in eastern Iowa, currently an idle nuclear power plant, will soon be turned into a 690 megawatt solar farm. The new solar farm will produce even more energy than the nuclear power plant's 615 megawatts.
The solar plant will be located in the Duane Arnold area of Palo, County Lynn. The project is expected to attract $ 700 million in investment, generate $ 41.6 million in tax revenue and about 300 jobs under construction.
Construction is scheduled to begin in winter 2022. NextEra Energy Resources intends to launch a solar farm by the end of 2023.
The nuclear power plant in Iowa was decided to close in 2019 for environmental reasons. In 60 years, the nuclear power plant will be demolished, the nuclear materials will be transported to a central storage facility, which will be built by then, any contamination will be removed and the land will be available for reuse.
