The production of passenger cars in Russia decreased by 2.8 times in eight months
In Russia, in January-August 2022, the production of passenger cars fell by 2.8 times (by 64.5%) year-on-year, to 325 thousand units, the production of trucks over the same period decreased by 18.3%, to 91.7 thousand units, follows from the data of Rosstat.
In August, 24.7 thousand passenger cars were produced, which is 3.2 times (69%) less than in August 2021, but 27.3% more than in July 2022.
In August 2022, 11.1 thousand trucks were produced, which is 2.6% less than a year earlier and 15% more than in July.
The production of buses with a permissible maximum weight of more than 5 tons in August was at the level of 1013 units (-13.8% y/y and +16.6% against July). According to the results of 8 months, it decreased by 10.7%, to 7.7 thousand units.
The production of internal combustion engines in August amounted to 14.3 thousand units (-26.9% y/y and +36.7% against July). Since the beginning of the year, it has decreased by 23.1%, to 163 thousand pieces.
For eight months, 22.6 thousand units (-23%) were produced in the country for motor vehicles. Rosstat does not give an absolute indicator of their release for the last month, but specifies that in annual terms it fell by 26.7%, and increased by 2.1% by July.
Most of the global automakers operating in Russia in the spring suspended deliveries of cars and components to the country, and also paused their local production for an indefinite period. Among the players in the passenger car market, which account for the bulk of sales of new cars, at the beginning of June cars in Russia were produced by UAZ and the Chinese Haval. They were later joined by AvtoVAZ, which restarted the assembly of Granta and Niva in simplified trim levels during the summer.
